Flag Design Contest

The public is invited to submit a design for the new flag for the city of Fort Madison. The City of Fort Madison is a vibrant, growing community full of creativity and culture.  Anyone who lives in, or goes to school in, Fort Madison is welcome to take part in either, or both, of these contests.

City Slogan

A slogan, motto or tagline is a good way to quickly describe a city’s style or personality. Often just a few words or a sentence, an effective slogan can highlight what makes a place appealing or unique or capture a town’s identity.

All entries must be received by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2022. Entries may be submitted electronically to
mblind@fortmadison-ia.com. They may also be mailed or hand delivered to City Hall at:

Entries must include the submitters full name, address (and school if they attend school in Fort Madison but live outside city limits) and phone number.  Entries that are missing any of this information may be disqualified.  

All entries become the property of the City of Fort Madison, and may be used as they determine, including marketing, promotions,
governmental, and other civic related purposes.  The City of Fort Madisonreserves the right to use parts of the winning slogan or slogans to create a new slogan for its use. The City of Fort Madison is not required to use any winning slogan.  Decisions of the City of Fort Madisonwith respect to the contest are final.

The winner is entitled to bragging rights and a $250 prize for their successful entry.

City Flag

The City flag should capture what makes the City unique as a community and should serve as an important illustration of what the City represents.

The City flag should capture what makes the City unique as a community and should serve as an important illustration of what the City represents.

Five Principles of Flag Design

  1. Keep it Simple
  2. Use Meaningful Symbols
  3. Use 2 or 3 Basic Colors
  4. No Lettering or Seals
  5. Be Distinctive or Related

Flag Design Guidelines:

  1. Design should be in color, simple, clean, and clear. All entries should be designed on a rectangle that can be enlarged to fit a standard 3'x5' ratio (see template above).
  2. Designs cannot be plagiarized or in otherwise not be an original work of the artist/designer.
  3. Each design submitted should be accompanied by an official application including a written description of the meaning and/or symbolism contained in the design. 
  4. All participants must live or go to school in Fort Madison.

Committee will pick top 5 entries and those will be posted for public judging from May 2 through May 11.
The top three of those five will be reviewed by the Council on Tuesday May 17th with the option of selecting one as the new city flag.
The winner is entitled to bragging rights and a $500 prize for their successful entry.
