    Come step back in time at historic Old Fort Madison, Iowa, the Midwest's oldest American military garrison on the upper Mississippi River. Discover what life was like at a United States fur trading post on the rugged frontier of the Missouri Territory. Learn the exciting heritage of Iowa before it was a state and of its involvement in the War of 1812. This historic installation was home to Captain Horatio Stark's Company of the First Regiment, United States Infantry, from 1808 to 1813.

    Open 360 days a year to give tours and greet visitors. Centrally located in the Santa Fe Depot Museum at Avenue H & 10th Street, they maintain extensive catalogs of historical records, documents, photography and artifacts. They also schedule tours for Engine 2913 in Riverview Park, The Old 1867 Lee County Jail and Brush College. The museum maintains brochures and information for walking tours and other communities in the general area.

  7. Sheaffer Pen Museum o-PEN for tours

    May 30, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM @ Sheaffer Pen Musem

    Walter A. Sheaffer, a Fort Madison jeweler, secured his first patient for a self-filler pen in 1908, changing the writing industry forever. The world renowned Sheaffer Pen Company was founded here in 1913 and is a large part of Fort Madison history. The museum is open Mondays and Fridays from 10 am to 2 pm or by prearranged appointment. Both self-guided and guided tours are available. The museum is handicapped accessible , with free admission. Donations are appreciated.

    City Hall offices and Fort Madison Public Library closed today in observance of the Memorial Day Holiday. Monday trash route will be picked up on Tuesday, May 31.

  2. Old Fort Battlefield Memorial Day Service

    May 30, 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM @ Fort Madison Battlefield - 4th Street & Avenue H

    The Friends of Old Fort Madison Committee of the North Lee County Historical Society will hold a short Memorial Day Service at 9:00 am on Monday, May 30 at the site of the original Fort Madison (4th Street & Avenue H). The Memorial Service will honor the 23 known soldiers that passed away defending our country at Fort Madison from 1808-1813 and are buried somewhere in the area of the original Old Fort site. The current soldiers of the Replica Old Fort Madison will give the Salute, Old Fort Chairman Sharon Harp will read the names of the fallen soldiers. We hope to make this an annual event on the battlefield. It will be a short service 25-30 minutes in length so everyone can still attend the Memorial Day service at Oakland Cemetery at 11:00 am. There is no seating so please bring your lawn chairs if you need to relax. Hope to see you there to honor our soldiers!

    Fort Madison's Annual Memorial Day service will be held at 11: 00 am on Monday, May 30, 2016 in Oakland Cemetery with the Reverend Mike McHugh as the guest speaker and the Fort Madison Veteran's Honor Guard performing military rights.
