TRASH PICK UP

In 2001, the City of Fort Madison began an implementation of a revised Solid Waste Code. In this code, the City began billing each residential customer $10.00 per month for weekly trash pick up. If there are multiple customers at a single address (4 units max), such as a multiplex dwelling, each customer will be charged. These charges will be on your monthly water bill. They will appear as "GB" for Garbage/Landfill. You will also see a code "WM" for Waste Management. This charge is for landfill usage. This fee is currently in the process of being restructured.

Each home owner is allowed to have no more than two (2) 40 gallon containers of trash picked up each week. Such containers shall have a gross weight not exceeding forty (40) pounds, and shall be kept tightly closed. You may use existing containers that you have as long as they are 40 gallons or less. As an alternative to using metal or plastic containers, the City will allow the following substitutions:

A. No more than two trash bags (40 gallons or less with a gross weight not exceeding 40 pounds), in place of one 40 gallon container.

B. You are allowed a total of four trash bags (40 gallons or less with a gross weight not exceeding 40 pounds), in place of two 40 gallon containers.

Trash containers or trash bags shall not be placed more than 3 feet from a public street of alley.

Any additional bags of trash will need to be tagged with a yellow sticker at a cost of $.75 per sticker. These can be obtained at City Hall, County Market, Hy-Vee and Kempker's True Value.

Monday, February 20 Presidents Day – Monday trash route will be picked up on Tuesday, February 21.
Friday, April 6 Good Friday – Friday trash route will be picked up on Monday, April 9.
Monday, May 28 Memorial Day – Monday trash route will be picked up on Tuesday, May 29.
Wednesday, July 4 Fourth of July Holiday – Route "A" Recycling & Route "B" Yard Waste will be picked up on Tuesday, July 3.
Monday, September 3 Labor Day – Monday trash route will be picked up on Tuesday, September 4.
Monday, November 12 Veterans Day – Friday trash route will be picked up on Monday, November 13. 
Thursday, November 22 Thanksgiving – Thursday trash route will be picked up on Wednesday, November 21.  Route "A" Recycling & Route "B" Yard Waste will be picked up on Tuesday, November 20.
Friday, November 23 Thanksgiving Holiday – Friday trash route will be picked up on Monday, November 26.
Tuesday, December 25 Christmas Holiday – Tuesday trash route will be picked up on Wednesday, December 26.
Tuesday, January 1 New Years Day Holiday – Tuesday trash route will be picked up on Wednesday, January 2, 2013.
