The City of Fort Madison owns and operates 5 wells; we use 2 wells at a time and pump an average of 2.1 million gallons of raw water per day. The Water Treatment Plant treats the water by using a reverse osmosis process. The plant is designed to treat 4.5 million gallons per day.
Once the treatment process is complete the water is pumped from a 1 million gallon clear water reservoir to be stored. We can store a total of 2.5 million gallons of water which can supply the city with almost one complete day of usage without implementing any emergency conservation measures.
As regulations and drinking water standards change, we continually strive to adopt new and better methods of delivering the best quality drinking water. It is our commitment to incorporate these changes system-wide in an expeditious and cost-effective manner.
