2023 Solid Waste and Recycling Collection
All residential units will be charged $15.00 per month for a 65-gallon solid waste cart or $17.50 per month for a 95-gallon solid waste cart. If there are multiple customers at a single address (four maximum), such as a multiplex dwelling, each customer will be charged by the size of the cart they request.
Solid Waste Code
Solid Waste charges will be on your monthly water bill. They will appear as "GB" for garbage / landfill. You will also see a code "IW" for integrated waste. This charge is for landfill usage. The fee is $1.00 for residents and $1.50 for commercial. For more information on collection fees, view our services and fees.
The City of Fort Madison provides either a 65 or 95 - gallon cart for residents to use for weekly solid waste collection. All solid waste must be bagged and put into the cart with the ability for the lid to close. The carts are the property of the City of Fort Madison and will be maintained by the City. For complete details of the solid waste cart program, visit solid waste collection.
IMPORTANT new information regarding the 2022 Trash/Recycling & Yard Waste Collection schedule. Please be sure to read the information provided below very carefully by clicking on the attached link under "Recycling & Yard Waste Collection".
Recycling & Yard Waste Collection
On Wednesdays, every other week recyclables and yard waste are picked up. In an effort to improve the recycling program in the City of Fort Madison, the city and Great River Regional Waste Authority have partnered to make the following changes.
Residents who participate in the recycling program will be required to place their recycling items in a GRRWA recycling bin or they can choose to use their own garbage can/cart for recycling (no larger than 40 gallons). The use of your own garbage can/cart for recycling must have a blue square painted on the side and "RECYCLING" painted in white over the blue square.
Residents who are new or would like a recycling bin from GRRWA can pick up their free 18- gallon recycling bin at the GRRWA at 2091 303rd Avenue (across from Tri-State Rodeo Arena). Residents must present a current City of Fort Madison water bill to receive their free recycling bin. There is a fee for any additional recycling bin needed. Recyclables can be in either in the GRRWA recycling bin or your garbage can/cart, which will need to be properly labeled.
Place your recycling and yard waste items, where you normally place your trash for collection. Yard waste runs spring, summer, and fall. Recycling collection is year-round.
