[ARCHIVED] City Accepting Nomination Petitions/Affidavits of Candidacy for 2nd & 3rd Ward Council Seats

Nomination Petitions and Candidate Affidavits for the December 29, 2020 City Special Election for the 2nd and 3rd Ward City Council positions are available at the Fort Madison City Clerk’s Office, 811 Avenue E.

Nomination Petitions must be delivered to the City Clerk’s office no later than 5:00 P.M. on Friday, December 4, 2020.  A Nomination Petition must be completed along with an Affidavit of Candidacy.  Nomination petitions and affidavits can be obtained from the City Clerk’s office or from the Iowa Secretary of State’s website.

Fort Madison City Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM with the exception of the Thanksgiving holiday on November 26 and 27. City Hall will be open until 5:00 P.M. on Friday, December 4 to accept Nomination Petitions.

A candidate must be 18 years of age when his or her Nomination Petition is filed and eligible to vote. Candidates must live in the ward they intend to represent.  Persons signing the petitions are to live in the ward.

The petition must be signed by eligible voters equal in number to at least 2% of those who voted to fill the same office at the last regular city election, but not less than 10 persons.  The following signatures will be required:

2nd Ward – 10 signatures

3rd Ward – 10 signatures

It is recommended that Candidates obtain more than the required number of signatures on their Petitions.  This will guard against possible unacceptable signatures causing the Petitions to be invalid.
