[ARCHIVED] Public Planning Meeting for Original Fort and Battlefield Site

The public is being asked to help determine the community’s vision for the original Fort Madison fort and battlefield site and express their views regarding a preservation and management plan for the site. To accomplish this, a public planning meeting will be held at 6:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 4, at Council Chambers of Fort Madison City Hall.
The City of Fort Madison received an American Battlefield Protection Program Grant funded through the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, to prepare a preservation and management plan for the site. The Walker Collaborative of Nashville, Tennessee, was hired to create the plan. This plan will determine vision (use and layout) for the property that will reflect the historical events and significance of the site for future historical, interpretive, and educational purposes. The plan will also identify the best methods to interpret the site and design interpretive materials (signs, kiosks, and/or museum facility) and give recommendations as to the most appropriate locations for these.
A second meeting will be held in 2015 for the community to review the research and draft document of plan.
For more information, please contact City Clerk Melinda Blind at (319) 372-7700, ext. 206.
